Kirin Heartland Beer Review

Josh:It's true that beer in green (and clear) bottles are more prone to skunkiness. That's because they don't filter out all of the strong light that brown bottles do, and when light hits the bottle it creates a photochemical reaction with the hops that produces the skunky smell. Now go down to the Land Beer Circus and tell the world how awesome their miso and green tea beers are.

Josh:PS: Ginga Kogen for the win.

Eric:Green tea beer isn't awesome.

Josh:Have you tried it? You'd be surprised.

Eric:Yes. We even reviewed it here. In fairness though, I don't particularly like green tea flavored anything.

Josh:I see. Well, I only had it once and perhaps there are a few good reasons why our opinions differ. First, I had it at the Land Beer Circus so I'm sure it was fresh. Maybe the bottle you had was a bit old - a likely possibility since it's not a popular beer. Secondly, I had it with food. Perhaps the food I had complemented the beer well, or perhaps it masked whatever bad flavors you found in it. Also, if I remember right I started out drinking a stout first, which may have ruined my palate for just about everything that came after it. That's a lot of rationalizing for something that's probably not worth the effort I'm spending on it. But I remember being quite impressed with it as the bitterness of the green tea lent itself well to the character of the beer. Regardless of whether or not that beer is good or shit, the Land Beer Circus is definitely worth a visit and Kinsachi is at least trying to make beers that are different from the usual dry, bland lagers that Japan is known for.
