I think people feel obligated to say things like “this was a really hard decision” when making announcements like this, but it wasn’t. Everyone who has participated in HikanNinja has had some pretty significant changes in their lives over the last year leading to less and less contribution, fewer updates and less regular content.

Add to that the issue that we all want to focus our time on other projects as well and it makes sense to shut down HN.

I own this domain until 2015 so until then I will leave what has been posted here unless one of us comes up with another use for the name. Or if you would like to buy it off me for the sum I paid for it (a million dollars) feel free to get in touch at hikanninja at gmail dot com. For more generalized topics (not just focused on Japan) you can visit my personal website at ninjalicker.com

There are 1,694 entries including comments, this one will round it out to 1,695.

Dave K.:You don't know me but I think I came across your blog because of your penchant for reviewing disgusting flavors of Pepsi. It's been in my feed since. Great run, enjoyed it, good luck on whatever else you're all doing.

Nick:I blame this on Eric.

Peter:You should blame this on Eric. Blaming pretty much everything on Eric is an okay idea.
Reviews and all the stuff I did here will still exist at ninjalicker.com only you can expect a lot of other random stuff as well.

chris:otsukare! i've enjoyed this site a lot. thanks for all the hard work!

See that fairly pretty young lady. She has two names. The first is Rina Nakanishi. That was the name she used when she was in the girl group AKB48. She wasn't the most popular member, in fact, there are so many members of the group that most members are not the most popular members. This has led to some problems for the fame hungry women who so desperately seek attention.

The more astute readers will be able to work out the AV in this ad means adult video, which is where Rina has ended up, but her AV name is Rico Yamaguchi.
Capitalizing on fleeting fame isn't exactly shameless in my opinion, but part of me wonders if she would have ended up in porn if she hadn't been part of a girl group in the first place. It also makes me wonder if this will reflect poorly on the rest of the group, or start a new trend.

Here's some hip hop from Ryuzo from Kyoto. The video contains the clever line, "You're under arrest for the creation and distribution of drug music." Get it? 'Cuz dat shit'll get you high. Cookin Soul remix below.

A secret I have basically kept from my wife is that our second child is sort of named after one of my favorite manga characters. I read the books in English so I knew her as Alita, from the Battle Angel Alita series. Turns out her real name in the original Japanese is "Gally" and the cat is named Alita, but it was switched for English publication.

There are plans to make a live action version of the movie, but I doubt it will work out. There is really too much material for a really good focused two hours unless they just concentrate on the origin story, but that leaves out a lot of the good stuff. Also there would be casting, Gally is supposed to be pretty young looking and small, so getting multiple movies out of a teen actress is a stretch.

The real reason I am writing this is because I tried to talk about this character with some Japanese people and it illustrates a fairly large misconception about Japan. I tried to tell my friends about "Gunnm" and their first assumption was I was mis-pronouncing "Gundam". That being one of the most famous long running animations in Japan and generally not my type of program.

This is actually one of the more influential comics and most, if not all of the people I encounter on a day to day basis have never heard of it. Many newcomers to Japan are under the impression that pretty much all Japanese people read and therefore have a fairly deep knowledge of Japanese anime and manga. What I have found is that most adults have maybe one comic they still read if any at all. My wife reads one piece, but doesn't know anything else about any other comic other than stories I have introduced her to. One Piece, in this case, is sort of a hold over from her teenage years and it is something she wouldn't readily admit to people unless she knew them rather well.

So if you are really into comics and come to Japan, be prepared to introduce your Japanese friends to them and not the other way round. Unless you are going to the anime cosplay summit or something similar.

Japan loves it some videos. A great show here has clips of things happen slowly. So of course they chose the most tasteful things, like slapping people in the face.

or spraying champagne on a girl person.

Because I know its the first thing I would do.

Loyal readers know I recently become the owner of the Sony iphone and i have been pretty pleased with it. As was Sony, which sold 300,000 of these little bitches in the first month. Others perked up their ears and all realized "Damn, we sure missed out on the large phone without the phone function phone." called the ipad.

Samsung has you covered, please click here for their website that I hate with a passion. They are going to introduce the Galaxy S, which is an android run version of the ipad.
Should be interesting.

Sleeping With Hinako
The title itself is misleading, because you are probably thinking that "sleeping" int his instance means "putting your penis in her vagina" which it does not. This is much more innocent, or, to be more accurate, much more insidious because of the false innocence on top of the PG rated porn within.
Feel free to jump right in and try sleeping with Hinako and see if you feel dirty after.

3 Drinks 1 Review
Peter drinks pretty much everything that seems like a bad idea all in one go. He's been reading a book about DNA, wondering if his DNA now consists of carbonated bubbles and misery. Who knows, maybe thats the combination for the next stage in evolution.

Eating Soft-Shell Turtle
I recently had the opportunity to eat "suppon," or soft-shelled turtle, at a fairly upscale place in Nishiki. The restaurant only seats a maximum of ten customers, so I was able to watch from the counter as they prepared the food.

HN News Dump
Just the random bits that have collected over the last little while put together in a saucy lasagna full of layers of informational goodness.
Read it bit by bit so your brain doesn't get fat.

HN Law
Question: I am a foreign resident in Japan and do not speak Japanese fluently. What should I do if I need legal advice?

Japanese Girls the Guide the Interview
Peter gets some lovin time with SMASH, the author of Japanese Girls the Guide. They talk girls, beer, dates, girls, the really mean review Peter wrote, Japanese culture, girls, culture shock and a little bit about girls. If you read the initial attack on Japanese Girls the Guide website, this is probably essential listening.

Kirin - Regular Lineup Video Review
Nate drinks seven different Kirin beers in 40 minutes, reviews each one, changes his shirt for some reason (off screen), and learns a little Japanese.

HikanNinja News
I suppose this is the December wrap up and new year introduction version of the News Dump. The New Year is a really important time in Japan, far more significant than Christmas and it leads to a heightening of all emotions. Also, the train I take into work was stopped twice because of snow and three times because of suicide.

The Japanese Girls Guide
There are few things easier to provide than advice. It can be crap but people feel like their advice is always more valuable and more accurate than anyone else's advice that has come before. Let me give you some advice on that, don't listen to anyone. Ironic, isn't it? I found this online guide and decided to do a little exploring to see if the advice would be worth the 2,000 yen they are asking.

HikanNinja News
All the news fit to read, summarized into nugget sized bits. Nuggets are made by putting a chicken on a spit and spinning it so fast all the meat stick to the side of the bin surrounding it. The meat is then scraped off an made into nuggets. Thats what I do with the news.

Pepsi Azuki Taste Test
Peter gets his new Pepsi on, this time based on the red bean that graces the insides of a lot of things you don't usually expect red bean to be in, like Pepsi, I guess. Also, in order to pretend like we care about giving a fair and balanced view a bunch of other people give their opinions.

Kanna the Lady Ninja
This Sunday at Ozon, the top booty shakers in central Japan will compete to qualify for a spot in the Dancehall Queen Japan 2009 finals. One of the dancers putting her ass on the line is Kanna the Lady Ninja. We got Kanna to tell us about her favorite move, the appeal of Jamacian culture in Japan, and where to kick it in Mie.

Japanese Pranks
Recently the internet has been all agog over a television prank where some comedians are led to believe that a sniper has shot everyone else in the room. Like everyone else, I thought it was horrible, but I watched it, then showed it to other people and tried not to laugh. Japan has a long history of pretty mean pranks, here's some found drifting around the internet.

HikanNinja News Japan
A more mixed bag than the recent arrests addition. Running the gambit of news so you can pretend to be informed without actually ever looking through the news for the bits that are interesting to read. Thats what we do, the work, for you, so you look cool.

Hello Kitty Product Round Up
While we all know that the corporate king of merchandising is Hello Kitty which has plastered that vacuous face over every single product it possibly could there are still products that are surprising when we come across them. Enclosed in this entry are some of the odder iterations of Hello Kitty products, many of which I assume are not officially licensed items.

In & Around Nagoya: Halloween 2009 Guide
Everyone and their mother has at least one Halloween themed event going on this month. By no means is the following list comprehensive, but it should be enough to get you started. So there is no reason for you to sit around and contemplate loneliness when you could dress up like the opposite sex and contemplate loneliness in a public space with lots of other people.

Kirin Heartland Beer Review
Kirin takes a stab at producing a pilsner in a green, etched glass bottle with Heartland Beer. Served in half liter portions for around 250 yen, it's set up to win over the Heineken crowd.

Kirin Ichiban Shibori Stout
Nate gives Kirin's stout a go. In the spirit of a Japanese made Irish beer, enjoy the sounds of the Japanese "Irish Punk" band, The Cherry Cokes.

Kasen Kankyo Rakuen, Gifu
Do you like feet? Do you like my feet? Would you like to see my feet get eaten? Probably for the only time in your life you have the chance to see me dip my feet into a pool where some of the most vicious animals known to man try to devour me whole. Luckily they are all too small to do anything more than give me the scrubbing I needed.

Hikan Ninja News The Recent Arrests version
All the most recent news worth reading on Japan broken down into easily digestible chunks for those drug / media addled minds who are incapable of reading full length articles. Also, totally biased commentary which I will immediately claim as unbiased reporting.
